In Peru, a report presented by the Ombudsman’s Office reveals that, so far in 2022, 117 femicides have been reported. In addition, according to the NGO “Ayuda en Acción”, 7 out of 10 women do not report acts of violence due to shame or distrust in the justice system.
Therefore, on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which is celebrated every November 25th, a group of lawyers from Hernández & Cía. offered a workshop for 50 low-income adolescent women.
The meeting, entitled “Violence against women: everyone’s problem”, addressed topics such as the importance of promoting gender equitable attitudes and behaviors through education and parenting, what are the types of violence and how to prevent them. The aim was to empower and encourage them to report any violence.
This approach was not only well received but laid the groundwork for further interaction. The young women felt that they had a voice and that they were being listened to and advised by experts.
On the occasion of this date, the United Nations launched an activism campaign: “UNiTE! to end violence against women and girls”. This initiative declared the 25th of every month as “Orange Day”, so that every month there will be a day dedicated to raising awareness about this matter and ensuring the acting on it. Orange is the color that represents a future without violence against women and girls.
In that line, the team of Hernández & Cía. culminated the workshop with an interactive “orange activity” to generate bonds among the participants. In this safe and informal environment, young women were encouraged to ask questions and share their experiences.
